Itinerary in the Mississippi Delta (Feb 17-26, 2007)


Friday, 2/17. Getting There/Clarksdale

7:30 a.m. Ground transport (Airporter) from Brandeis to Logan airport.

10:15 a.m. Depart Boston Logan (Terminal E) to Memphis International Airport (Northwest 5737) Arrive Memphis 12:37 p.m..
We saw Margot’s mother briefly and then picked up the rental van, which took a while to get ready

1:00 p.m. Drive south from Memphis along hwy 61.

2:00 p.m. Blue and White café, Tunica, for lunch

3:30 p.m. Delta Blues Museum: met Shelly Ritter, the museum director
Walked through New World District, but never got inside the Clarksdale Bus Station. Met Ms. Shirley Fair at Oooh So Pretty, and then met George Messenger in Messenger’s Pool Hall on 4th.

5:00 p.m. Van to Cleveland.
We ended up having take-out pizza at the McClain House


Sat. 2/18. Community History Research in Clarksdale (Coahoma County)

8:00 breakfast at the Country Platter.
9:00 van to Clarksdale
10:00 Bubba O’Keefe gives us a tour at WROX on Delta St.
11:30 a.m. We went to Cathead. Found out the library (where we had a hope to hold a community meeting) had been closed due to the ice storm. Tentatively tried to have a community meeting at the Delta Blues Museum, but nobody came. Fortunately we learned there was a Soul Food Fiesta lat W.A. Higgins Middle School in East Clarksdale so we went there with Shelly Ritter
1:00 p.m. At the headstart Soul Food Fiesta, meet Johnny Lewis, Higgins principal etc. An important set of conversations about community social and education needs in East Clarksdale.

5:00 p.m. Van back to Cleveland. Shopping at Krogers.

6:00 p.m. Cooked Dinner at the McClean house.

Sunday, 2/19. Worship Service in Shaw and Community History Research in Mound Bayou (Bolivar County)

Note: Claudia, Maria and Katie weren’t feeling well, so couldn’t go to Shaw.

10:00 a.m. Van to Shaw, Mississippi (stoped at Deacon Jim Collins’ house first)

11:00 a.m Church services at Stranger’s Home Baptist Church, Shaw, Old hwy 61

2:00 p.m. Lunch at Cora Horn’s farm (near Merigold/Mound Bayou)

5:00 p.m. meet Dr. Eulah Peterson and eigh others members Mound Bayou Historical Foundation at City Hall. Walking tour.

7:30 p.m. Cook dinner together in Cleveland. Discuss day’s events.

Monday, 2/20. Jewish and African-American Heritage in the Delta (Luther Brown, Henry Outlaw and Rabbi Seth Limmer)

8:00 a.m. Tour of Shaw with Deacon Jim Collins (first in his house, then drove through Shaw.)

10:30 a.m. Met with Rabbi Seth Limmer and Luther Brown in the Jacob's room of Ewing Hall, Delta State
12:00 Lunch at the The Senator’s Place
1:00 Bus tour start through the Delta with Seth Limmer's group from New York state.

6:30 p.m. dinner/meeting Jewish community in Cleveland, led by Ed Kossman, with Rabbi Limmer’s group at temple. (Cleveland) Conversation in sanctuary with the New York and local Cleveland Jewish community.

Intense evening class meeting, sorting through the day.


Tuesday, 2/21. Community research in Clarksdale

9:00 a,m Van to Clarksdale.
10:00. Johnny Lewis gives us a walking tour of the New World District

1:30 Some students (with Mark and Ellen) podcasting/art workshop in Higgins Middle School
Others do library research with Dave.

4:00 p.m. Meet up at Messenger’s on 4th street.

6:00 p.m. fast food in Clarksdale.

7:00 p.m. St. Gabrielle’s tour by sister and Eunice Sanders in Mound Bayou. See St Gabriell’s Closet Thrift store. Then over to Richard Crowe’s house with Eunice and Lynn Linnemeir; Oral history from Mr. Crowe and presentation on art and memory by Lynn Linnemeir.



Wednesday, 2/22. Community research in Clarksdale.

8:30 a,m Van to Clarksdale

Some students to library research at the Clarksdale library

Thursday, 2/23. Emmett Till and Civil Rights History

7:00 a.m. Breakfast

8:00 a.m. vans leave: tour of Emmett Till sites (Henry Outlaw) for Sumner courthouse, then Glendora, then to Money.

1:30 return to Cleveland. Lunch at the Senator’s Place in Cleveland with Susan Glisson’s civil rights class.

2:30. Mark, Ellen and Rachel go to Clarksdale for follow up research. (David and students write journals in Cleveland)

In Clarksdale: Mark meets up with Shelly Ritter and Wilma Wade, supervisor of Clarksdale Public schools
Rachel and Ellen interview Shirley Fair, Betsy…
Mark and Ellen go to see community cemeteries.

6:30 p.m. Dinner at Dockery Farms. Charles McLaurin doesn’t come, but we are jointed by Eunice Sanders, Richard Crow, and Lynn Marshall Linnemeir.


Friday, 2/24. Community research in Baptist Town in Greenwood (LeFlore County)

8:00 a.m. Van leaves for Greenwood; pick up Ms.Kathleen Cromwell in Itta Bena, who facilitates our visit to Baptist Town.

9:00 a.m. breakfast at Sylvester Hoover’s store

10:00 a.m. Walking tour of Baptist Town

12:00 p.m. Eat at Hoover’s grocery

2:00 p.m. Several students seet with Dr. Pauline Stamp to discuss history of Baptist Town. Friendship Baptist Church

Others play basketball in community.

Some do late afternoon library research.

4:00 p.m Blues performance in Baptist Town across street from Sylvester Hoover’s place “Norman and his Blues Band”

6:30. Van to Cleveland.


Saturday, 2/25. Community research in Greenwood

7:00 a.m. Breakfast.

8:30 a.m. Van to Greenwood.

9:30 a.m. Some do library research

Community meeting with the Bapist Town Community Development Association. Followed by art workshop for local youth, led by Hannah.

12:00 p.m. Meet Sen. David Jordan for meeting in City Hall.

6:00 pm. We arrive (late) for the Mound Bayou St. Gabriell’s Senior Citizen Fashion Show. Sam performs “Will the Circle Be Unbroken” Maria performs in the Fashion Show, dressed in clothing from St Gabriell’s Closet!


Sunday, 2/26. Going Home.

8:30 a.m. Leave for Memphis airport. Eunice waiting for us at Shelby with presents! Brunch at Margot’s parents in east Memphis.

2:20 p.m. Depart Memphis International for Boston Logan. Northwest Airlines 5736. Arrive Boston: 6:25 p.m.
